1. What cookies are

Related technologies do similar jobs: local storage keeps data in the browser, pixels (tiny transparent images) record that a page loaded, and scripts may read or write both. Where this policy says “cookies”, it covers all of them.
2. What we use cookies for
We run a publication, not a shop or a login-based service, so our cookie use is limited.

Strictly necessary cookies cannot be switched off without breaking the site — they are what makes it load and stay secure. Everything else is optional.
3. What we do not use cookies for
- We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles for sale.
- We do not use cookies to identify you personally as a potential legal claimant.
- We do not pass cookie-derived data to law firms, claim buyers, brokers or lead networks. This is a firm commitment, explained in our Editorial Policy.
4. Third-party cookies
Some cookies are set by services we rely on rather than by us directly — our host and content delivery layer, our analytics provider where in use, and any embedded third-party media you choose to interact with.
We do not control third-party cookies and cannot read their contents. Each provider governs its own cookie under its own privacy terms.

Consent, where required
Where the law of your location requires prior consent for non-essential cookies — including the UK, the EEA and a number of other jurisdictions — non-essential cookies are only set after you consent, and you can withdraw that consent at any time by clearing cookies in your browser.
A trade-off worth knowing
Blocking all cookies is your right and this site will still be readable. Some features may behave less smoothly, and pages may load more slowly, because caching relies on functional cookies.
6. Do Not Track
There is still no agreed industry standard for interpreting browser Do Not Track signals, and they are implemented inconsistently. We do not currently respond to DNT headers. Browser-level cookie controls, described above, are the reliable option.
